When Holly Christensen’s friend had a daughter who received a cancer diagnosis, she yearned to do more for the family.
She found the answer! Christensen started making princess-inspired yarn wigs. The idea not only helped her friend’s daughter, but also other children who have lost their hair during their battle with cancer.
Undoubtedly, losing your hair is one of the most difficult things to deal with after a cancer diagnosis. For children who undergo chemotherapy, it’s especially devastating. This Alaskan mother is doing everything she can for children diagnosed with cancer.
Holly Christensen, is a former oncology nurse and 31-year-old mother of three. She first thought of the idea to make a Rapunzel yarn wig for her friend’s daughter Lily. Lily was diagnosed with lymphoma a year ago.
Christensen explains her motivation for making the yarn wig:
“I knew she would be going through a difficult time, and that no one would be able to take her suffering away. I also knew that losing her long, curly blonde hair at not even 3 years old would be difficult for her, so I figured that the yarn wig could help bring a little magic and fun to a difficult time in her life.”
After she gave the wig to Lily and saw just how happy it made her, a fire sparked inside Christensen.
Lily’s wig was such a big hit, that Christensen started bringing wigs to kids battling cancer all across the country.
Christensen with the help of her partner Bree Hitchcock, formed: “The Magic Yarn Project” that makes princess yarn wigs for children all over the country.
Christensen’s friends at church participated, and with a little help from Facebook, the project quickly gained attention.
She’s been contacted by hundreds of interested donors and volunteers around the world.
Christensen and her volunteers have created over 100 wigs for children who have lost their hair, and has new requests for wigs coming in faster than the organization can produce.
The Magic Yarn Project relies entirely on volunteers and donations from their GoFundMe page.
The project has raised over $45,000 since it’s launch. The Magic Yarn Project is currently accepting donations in order to create more wig-making workshops in local communities.

“The mission of The Magic Yarn Project is to create beautiful and soft princess yarn wigs for little girls with cancer and to encourage and facilitate volunteerism by involving communities nationwide in this project. We are so excited to see where this takes us and look forward to bringing light and magic to an otherwise very difficult time in the lives of little cancer fighters.”
What a beautiful mission statement from a very beautiful individual.
