Indian parents sue son and daughter-in-law to force them to give birth to a grandchild within a year or pay them 50 million rupees ($675,000).
61-year-old retired government officer Sanjeev Ranjan Prasad says he and his wife Sadhana Prasad can’t wait any longer because it’s an emotional and sensitive issue. Six years ago, his son, a pilot, got married.
As Prasad told reporters on Thursday, “We want a grandson or a granddaughter within a year or compensation because I have spent my life’s earnings on my son’s education.”
3.5 million rupees ($47,300) was reportedly spent by Prasad on his son’s American pilot training, according to the father.
To him, the most pressing issue is that his son and daughter-in-law “The main issue is that at this age we need a grandchild, but these people (my son and daughter-in-law) have an attitude that they don’t think about us,” as he put it.
“We got him married in the hope we would have the pleasure of becoming grandparents. It has been six years since their marriage,” Prasad said. “It’s as if we have nothing, despite having everything.”
There will be a hearing on Monday in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, where the petition was accepted and a hearing date set, according to media reports. We were unable to get in touch with the son and daughter-in-law for comment. Prasad and his wife, according to him, adore children.
As he put it, “We aren’t getting the love and affection we crave from the people we love the most.” “I’m feeling extremely unlucky right now.”
