Two Frenchmen in their early twenties tried to hold up a McDonalds in eastern France, but it did not go quite how they had planned. In fact, no amount of planning could have prepared them for what was waiting for them in the restaurant. The two men entered the restaurant in Dijon and fired their guns into the air, demanding the cashiers empty their registers and frightening the customers.
During all of the chaos, these gunmen failed to noticed that eleven of the forty McDonalds patrons were members of a French special forces team designed to take down terrorists. The team chose to hang back while the men were actively robbing the restaurant, because they did not want to escalate the situation with their weapons and risk the lives of the other customers.
Instead, they waited until one of the robbers tripped on his way out the door. Then, they tackled him. The other robber aimed his gun at two of the members of the special forces team and refused to lower his weapon when ordered, so they shot him in the stomach. The soldiers held the robbers at the restaurant until the police could arrive and take control of the scene. Both gunmen had to be treated for their injuries at a nearby hospital before they could be held in custody. They will have court dates in the near future and have to answer for their crimes. They are currently being held on charges of violence and armed robbery.
