Kelsey, a Golden Retriever, saved his owner’s life after he slipped and fell, breaking his neck on New Year’s Eve. “I was screaming for help but my nearest neighbor is about a quarter mile away and it was 10:30 p.m., but my Kelsey came,” stated the dog’s owner Bob. “By morning my voice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.”
When the accident happened, Bob was just 15 feet from his house. He was getting a log for his fireplace, so he was wearing only long johns, slippers and a shirt. For over 20 hours, Bob was laying paralyzed in the snow. The temperatures that night were 24 degrees. The entire time, Kelsey was by his side.
“She kept barking for help but never left my side,” said Bob. “She kept me warm and alert. I knew I had to persevere through this and that it was my choice to stay alive.” After 19 hours, Bob lost consciousness, but Kelsey didn’t give up. “She was letting out this screeching howl that alerted my neighbor. He found me at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day.”
Bob was immediately taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery. Bob is on his way to recovery and calls his dog is a “hero” to whom he will be forever grateful to for saving his life.
