If you have difficultly falling asleep at night, you’re not alone. It’s a very common problem. Sometimes, you may have trouble silencing your mind, it can wander with countless thoughts, and other times, you just might not be tired enough to fall asleep.
Sleep deprivation is very unhealthy. Your body needs an average of 6-8 hours a sleep each night in order to function at optimal levels during the day. If you are sleep deprived, it destroys productivity and can lead to long-term health issues.
According to WebMD, sleep loss can result in a variety of issues:
- Heart disease
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Irregular heartbeat
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
- Diabetes
There’s a nifty little trick called the “4-7-8” breathing technique that will help you fall asleep in just 60 seconds. Dr. Andrew Weil developed this technique and it’s extremely easy to follow. It blends meditation and breathing in a way that helps your body counteract stress.
The idea of the technique is to breath in through your nose for four seconds. Hold this breath for seven seconds. Then exhale for eight seconds. Repeat this three times and you should fall asleep.
The technique calms your heart rate and relaxes your body. Learn more about it in the video below, and be sure to give it a shot tonight.
