Turia Pitt, is an Australian model and athlete. In 2011, she was competing in a marathon back when a tragedy happen. Pitt was running in an outback marathon when she was trapped in a brush fire with no way out. Because she was unable to escape, Pitt squeezed herself in between two rocks and tried to wait for the inferno to pass.
Pitt recalls the moment, “It just got hotter and hotter and hotter and I couldn’t stand it anymore so I jumped up and tried to run and that’s when I got burned.”
Although the raging brush fire nearly took her life, she managed to run through the flames and survive.
Because Pitt suffered 3rd-degree burns on over 65% of her body, the doctors were forced to amputate four fingers on her left hand and her right thumb.
Pitt spent the next two years living in the hospital and wearing a compression mask in order to heal properly. Her longtime boyfriend Michael was by her side the entire time.
While Pitt was in intensive care, Michael quit his job in order to care for her and he even bought a diamond ring.
Michael was recently asked if he ever thought about leaving Pitt, and his response was: “I married her soul, her character, and she’s the only woman that will continue to fulfill my dreams.”
Pitt is a national hero in Australia who focuses on raising funds for charities that help patients in developing countries. She doesn’t focus on the scars, she says that the accident might have been the best thing to happen to her.
