There’s a reason that some of the world’s most popular vacation destinations are on water. Put very simply, because it’s soothing.
Since ancient times, humans have attributed healing and transformational properties to water. In early Rome, baths were an important part of cultural life, a place where citizens went to find relaxation and to connect with others in a calming setting. Rivers have long been seen as sacred places, and in a number of different spiritual contexts, water has symbolized rebirth, spiritual cleansing, and salvation.
Today, we still turn to water for a sense of calm and clarity. We spend our vacations on the beach or at the lake; get exercise and enjoyment from water sports like surfing, scuba diving, sailing, and swimming; refresh ourselves with long showers and soothing baths, and often build our lives and homes around being near the water.
Now, there’s scientific proof that water helps calm us down and bring relief from stress. The study, conducted by Health & Place, looked at the effects of green (trees and vegetation) and blue (water) spaces on one’s well-being.
It was concluded that “Higher levels of blue space visibility were associated with lower psychological distress.” In other words, the more you’re exposed to water, the less stressed you’ll be.
In short, if you have the opportunity to live in a body of water, you absolutely should. You may be surprised by just how therapeutic it can be.
